Transforming this house, Room By Room:

This is the room when we moved in 2015.

When we moved into our new home, I knew I wanted to tackle a ton of home renovations, but this one wasn’t first on my list. Looking back, this probably SHOULD’VE been and here is why.

When people walk into your home for the first time, you want to give them the wow factor based on the first thing they see. Your entry… well, we do not have a grand entry, so this room is basically the first thing you see.

While everyone loves to move into a new house and just get rid of all your old furniture and start fresh, that was NOT in my budget, so I had to make due with what we had. The funny thing is that we ended up having the EXACT same dining furniture as the previous owners… how does that happen?? Our previous dining room was almost twice the size of the new one, but I thought if the previous owners could make their table and chairs fit in there, I could too (since it was the exact same). IT. WAS. TIGHT….. but again, this room wasn’t a priority for me, so I just ignored how snug it was.

Update: I painted the walls and added a new farmhouse chandelier.

Let me remind you trend was about to happen… CHALK PAINT…let’s whitewash EVERYTHING!!! My husband went out of town and I decided to basically whitewash the entire house, including this table and chairs.

Update: I chalk painted everything…
This was one of my first big painting projects and I was VERY proud.
Update: I had wainscoting installed, added wall decor, had new wood floors installed.

Fast forward to when I realized that I wanted to make our home for US. Do you know how many times we used this dining room? Twice… MAYBE during Friendsgiving. That’s silly right?

After posting the table and chairs on marketplace, this lady came over to look and without even sitting down she said “here take my monies, this is going home with me.” (Probably not exactly like that, but she was excited for this new set.) I was ready to change it up and make this room functional for US.

Update: New chairs/sette and bar console. Lounge ready.

We immediately started using this space and the only regret was not doing it sooner.

Changing the functionality of a room and making it work for your family will always be the smarter move. If your family sits at the dining room table often or if you host a lot of events and need that space, keep it! Do what works best for you. For us, we prefer to sit, sip and chat in this new layout.

Now that it’s functional for us, I should just leave it alone right? Pssshhh. This wouldn’t be fun or interesting if I just left things alone – which is why I am in the business I am in.

Update: Custom framed artwork, new chandelier and new chairs.

Okay… we are ALMOST current! By this point, I have come a LONG way since the chalk paint days. I’ve acquired a wealth of new skills that have empowered me to pursue my design journey cost-effectively through DIY projects. Not only does it significantly reduce expenses, but it also brings me genuine joy as I continually expand my expertise in home renovation.

I bought some power tools and learned how to add trim all around my house. I learned how to do minor electrical work like hang this new chandelier and I am not afraid to break out the paint and paint the room myself.

The hardest part is getting started. You have to believe that YOU CAN DO IT and you cannot be afraid of failing. Trust me, I have failed a lot, but it’s not slowing me down and only pushes me to do better and learn more!

Update: Back wall complete with paint and trim.

The wall with the art is complete with paint, but I still need another coat all the way around. I love how much bigger the room feels and excited to get the ceiling finished. I hurt my shoulder about a month ago, so I will not be doing the ceiling myself.

If you were watching my stories this past weekend, you’ll see how I accidentally shattered the brand new sconce I JUST got in. I already placed an order for a replacement, but what in a pain in the butt. Those sconces took WEEKS to get in, so that’s annoying… I still need to get the electrical for the sconces done, but I wanted to get the placement right before my buddy came to help me with that part.

Update: Ceiling was painted black, new rug and sconces installed.

We ended up taking a mini vacay during Fall Break, so this room got put on hold. Can we talk about this rug real quick?!? It’s the Morgan Collection Cloudpile and by far the softest rug I have ever owned! I got the color Spice/Lagoon and you can grab it here. I also ordered an arch mirror for the bar cabinet wall, so once that is up, I think it will all look fantastic! Then, I will be all done, maybe!!

My sitting room is all complete…FOR NOW! Hope you enjoy the transformation as much as we do!

Update: New curtains, rug, olive tree, pillow covers and bench.

Okay… I am never really COMPLETELY done with a room. Let’s be real… This is my 2025 update to the Ellis Bar Lounge.
